The need to teach the fundamentals of personal financial management has never been greater. A 2015 survey conducted by the FINRA Investor Education Foundation concluded that Americans demonstrate low levels of financial literacy and have difficulty applying financial decision-making skills to real-life situations. For example, most Americans do not comparison-shop for credit cards, with 61% saying that in obtaining their most recent credit card, they did not collect and compare information about cards from more than one company. Despite the need, the "2018 Survey of the States" conducted by the Council for Economic Education found that there has been little increase in economic education in recent years and no growth in personal finance education in K-12 schools.

CARE seeks to change these trends by providing students and young adults with the know-how to be smart financial consumers. CARE achieves this by providing no-cost financial education workshops to high schools, colleges, and youth organizations on one of 3 topics: Budgeting and Savings, Credit and Debt, and Student Loans. These workshops are memorable for students due to the passion and knowledge our volunteers bring to each session.

Why We Need You

Hon. Paul Warren, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, Western District of New York

Each time I make a CARE presentation, I am left with a tremendous sense of satisfaction because I know that I have made a positive, personal, and meaningful impact on students. I would encourage anyone working in the bankruptcy system to participate in a CARE program in your community. Take the time to CARE. You’ll be glad you did.

Program Overview

CARE is 501(c)(3) tax-exempt financial literacy program that connects professionals in bankruptcy law, financial services, and other experts in financial education with students in the classroom.

Our volunteers are members of the local community who bring a wealth of knowledge and diverse personal experiences to each classroom they visit. Each of our financial education workshops is approximately 45 minutes in length, which allows enough time for question-and-answer sessions between the students and presenters.

Each of our volunteers is connected to a local CARE chapter and has the support network of fellow volunteers locally and across the country.

CARE Invites You to Create Change

There is no better way to create change and to make a difference in your local community than to sign up as a CARE volunteer. As CARE now has over 400 active volunteers, you would be joining one of the best financial literacy programs in the country.

You don’t need any prior experience in the classroom; CARE provides the training, presentation materials, speaker script and notes, and classroom guides and activities for the students and teachers. Find your local chapter or start your own if there isn’t one already, and get involved.

When you sign up as a volunteer, a member of the CARE team will reach out to you directly to discuss your interest in greater detail and provide you with the information you’ll need to join our team of volunteers.
